According to the Department of Transportation which regulates the
trucking industry they have a serious warning that affects everyone on
the highway.
According the their website
http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/spanish/english/pdfs/sec396_form10.htm IF
BRAKE SLACK EXCEEDS ONE INCH, YOU COULD BE DRIVING A “KILLER TRUCK”.
Also they go on to emphasize that the brakes should be checked before each trip and more frequently in hilly areas.
How does the SlackDog aide in making adjusting of the slack any easier you might ask.
The SlackDog is installed under the button of the pull pawl which stays
in place on it’s own either by use of the closed end or the open end
which in turn allows the user with a 5/16th inch wrench placed on the
adjusting bolt to easily back off usually between a quarter and half
turn.
Since the tool stays in place without holding it allows the truck
driver or mechanic to adjust the slack with one hand and in most cases
without crawling under the truck. There is no longer a need to pry and hold open the pull pawl with a screwdriver.
When visibility is poor it may be easier to use the closed end of the tool
by feeling for the pawl button then simply slide it over the button
allowing the beveled portion to easily slide under the button in either
direction pending on clearance.
With the SlackDog in place back off the adjusting bolt as indicated above.
Proper adjustment is the responsibility of the user.
